Site Resurrection!
That’s right my friends, The Dan Experiment is back. While I haven’t posted anything in months and no new worthwhile content has been posted in at least a year I haven’t forgotten about my blog. I started working on a whole new installation of Wordpress a month ago. I found time here and there to install plugins, find a new theme, and copy over the old data. The updated blog is now live!
Major Changes Soon!
Nope, the site’s not dead, far from it. Major changes are underway, changes I started planning back in July on my last update. This includes a different theme, new logo, new ideas, and a series of articles. Some of the planning is complete as are some ideas for the first few articles. I don’t have much more to say at this time. Stay tuned…
Template Tweaks
The template tweaks are nearly complete. Here are some of the changes I made:
- Changed the way links are handled under the “Browse” sidebar. Height is no longer defined as this caused text overflow from long subjects. Removed background image, added dashed line between links, changing spacing.
- Fixed validation errors caused by a plugin and “target” on some of the links.
- Improved layout style in CSS and PHP files and eliminated some redundancy. This resulted in a reduction in overall page size.
- Made page fluid instead of fixed width. Post content now resizes with the browser. This isn’t noticeable unless your resolution is 1280 px wide or more.

New Theme, Updates Soon
I’ve changed the site theme to Tomodachi. It’s going to take some tweaking (links are sized incorrectly) but I like it. I’ll be updating a lot of things around the site, including the static pages, plugins, and more.
I’m going to shift some of my posts to cover my observations and ideas on web development, design, hosting, and related topics. I already have some topic ideas, such as “What To Look For In A Web Developer / Designer.”
What’s this? A post?!?!?
That’s right my friends, a new post after a year and 3 months of nothing. Recent ideas rekindled my interest in this site. As I’m heading off to the gym in a few minutes I don’t have time for a major update, but here are a few high points that occurred during my off time:
- Graduated from college with an AS in Business Administration in April ‘07.
- Sentenced to probation with community service and restitution for my past crimes in April ‘07
- Landed a web development job in November ‘07.

I’m Back!
I decided to switch to a new, cheaper server. I’m now up and running on the new VPS. I wrote a new post on the old server by accident and it didn’t get moved over
I’ll try to summarize what has been going on with me.
I’ve been participating in a 12 week fitness competition, Body For Life. I’ve been keeping a daily log on the bodybuilding.com forum. The log can be found here: http://workout.thedanexperiment.com
I have a few things to post about in the blog so watch for updates soon! I promise!
Sorry About The Downtime
Sorry about the downtime everyone! Due to issues with Amex the bill didn’t get paid like it was supposed to and the site went down while I was 350 miles away visiting my parents without access to the proper card to pay it. That’s also one of the reasons why I haven’t had any updates in a while. Now that it’s back I’ll be posting more regular updates. I have a bunch of images to add to the gallery as well.
Long Overdo Update
Wow, it has been a while since my last post. I’ve been busy with other things and haven’t had much to share. My investment tracking script hasn’t had much work done to it. I’m planning on putting more time in this week. I have some ideas for its use that I’m looking into.
Watch for some new pictures today or tomorrow. I went camping this past weekend and haev a few pics. It ended up raining so I didn’t get as many as I expected. I also have a few others of my car and some other misc stuff to add.
PHP Project Started
I spent some time this weekend getting my summer PHP project started. As mentioned earlier, it will be an investment tracking WordPress plugin. I’ve made a list of features that I want to include as follows:
Will Be Included
- Track multiple investment portfolios.
- Track using total value or a share based system (similar to a mutual fund), allowing total balance to be hidden.
- WP subpage with full graphing and statistical analysis.
- Sidebar tracking with quotes showing daily changes (similar style to Yahoo Finance).
- Plugin controls fully integrate into WP admin menus with easy to use interface.
Gallery Online
Looks like I posted too soon. I ended up having time to get the gallery integrated! Now you’ll see the link in the tabs above and the random image on the sidebar. It was quite simple. I just had to add the correct gallery theme and add a few lines of code to the header and sidebar.
